and also if you look at women who get the surgery done most say it went well and they are happy….it has a 97 percent sucess rate and if anything goes wrong then it can be corrected…..it is not to cut the lips fully off or make u look like a child it is to make them smaller so its not noticeable in a bikini…..they cause embarrassment to some like me which actually depresses me….. and also cause irritation in clothing…..do not make assumptions…..you obviously dont no what its like to have something tha gets you down this much and there is no point living unhappily….if you read what people who have had it wrote they still have sexual pleasure….every1 nos the pleause comes from the clit

My vomit comment was directed against those who would associate prepubescence with sexual gratification. I will not withdraw that…ever.

If you have a condition which causes you physical pain I don’t understand why your doctor would say you are normal.

Certainly everyone has the right to cut off their arm if they so choose.

Nevertheless, a surgery which often results in painful sex for a woman in order to live up to some photoshopped ideal seems ludicrous and criminally negligent on behalf of the surgeon to me.

I am a strong, intelligent and otherwise confident woman. My doctor tells me I’m normal, my husband assures me I’m entirely beautiful, but my discomfort with my genitalia traumatizes me and makes me a deeply unhappy person. A million assurances do not change my deep-seeded and long-held feelings. If I choose to opt for surgery to modify aspects of my body which upset me and cause me physical discomfort, which would be stupifyingly traumatic in itself, I will be doing so for my own future mental health and self-esteem. For ME, for my own peace, sexuality, sanity. And my husband would support me and hold me while I cry about how difficult it is.

Don’t be so quick to judge others. My decision will nothing to do with men’s fantasies or mass marketing. Your disgust and anger, and even vomit, is unfair and often displaced. Support and understanding from other women may be needed, not your wrath.

I think this stuff needs to be talked about in health class in school or something. Obviously this is another form of abuse towards women and needs to be out in the open. The fact that FGM gets a lot of press is good, but knowing that it’s going on in our backyard, voluntarily (well, if you can call it that) should be huge red flag. This needs to be talked about in the media. People (men and women) should be outraged.

Then again, breast implants are somehow seen as acceptable. How’s that work?

Prolapse is a serious condition requiring surgery, not cosmetic change.

Incontinence is rarely fixed by surgery, unless, there has been a tear leaving a fistula, something that rarely happens in North America.

The types of situations you describe are vastly different from women being told their va-jay-jay doesn’t look “right”.

What’s the alternative for a woman who has a prolapsed bladder, incontinence, chronic constipation, pain from vaginal bulge coming out just from walking a block, can’t jump, run, cough, sneeze, laugh w/o incontinence from wide badly left unstitched, after chilbirth ‘the natural way’

There is very little difference between this mutilation and “Female Genital Mutilation” practiced in some non-Western cultures. While you could argue that the women who undergo the cosmetic surgery are making a choice, this absolutely reeks of the same woman-hating, body-controlling bullshit. Yeah, they’re making a choice. A bad choice.

I always think this is a great example of how oppression works in the Western world. People are so convinced that we are so “free” here. But, mass marketing pushes on our minds each day.

People are so quick to condemn other cultures without considering their own.

The fact that this surgery is so caught up with the idea of the “virginal” and prepubescent girl/woman is disturbing. Also, not even conidering the physiological ways this could impact a women’s arousal, my guess is that you can’t be loving sex that much if you’re such a slave to the gaze of another.
