If you would like to wear a candle on your Twitter profile in remembrance of December 6th, I’ve created one here
According to a recent American study, the idea of Internet users as loners with no social contact is a myth.
Americans are not as isolated as has been previously reported. We find that the extent of social isolation has hardly changed since 1985, contrary to concerns that the prevalence of severe isolation has tripled since then. Only 6% of the adult population has no one with whom they can discuss important matters or who they consider to be “especially significant” in their life.
and rather than detract from community involvement, those involved in internet activities are more likely to be involved in community organizations.
Some have worried that internet use limits people’s participation in their local communities, but we find that most internet activities have little or a positive relationship to local activity. For instance, internet users are as likely as anyone else to visit with their neighbors in person. Cell phone users, those who use the internet frequently at work, and bloggers are more likely to belong to a local voluntary association, such as a youth group or a charitable organization. However, we find some evidence that use of social networking services (e.g., Facebook, MySpace, LinkedIn) substitutes for some neighborhood involvement.
Overall Internet activity not only does not cause isolation it may also promote community involvement, cooperation, and social interaction.
Many bloggers are busy or just don’t feel the need to upgrade on a regular basis. However, many upgrades are for or at least include, security features.
When a security breach is found hackers are more than aware of these breaches and know which blogs to attack. Currently there are numerous blogs being attacked. Do yourself a favour and upgrade before you are one of them.
Writes Lorelle on her WordPress-centric blog:
There are two clues that your WordPress site has been attacked:
First, there are strange additions to permalinks, such as example.com/category/post-title/%&(%7B$%7Beval(base64_decode($_SERVER%5BHTTP_REFERER%5D))%7D%7D|.+)&%/. The keywords are “eval” and “base64_decode.”
The second clue is that a “back door” was created by a “hidden” Administrator. Check your site users for “Administrator (2)” or a name you do not recognize.
If you have already been hacked see this thread for fixes.
Well had to clear off a few cobwebs but otherwise the blog seems to be standing.
I can’t believe this weather first it rains then it pours then it thunderstorms then it rains again. The sun came out and it was still raining. Must be monsoon season.
Shona Holmes is making the rounds lying for the GOP. A commentator after this article backs her up. One never knows if it is just your garden variety moron or a plant but re his assertion “In Canada, I was put on a year-long waiting list to see a knee specialist.” Either he really doesn’t need it badly or has the same relation to the truth Holmes has. My husband got a referral from the local clinic and was in seeing the surgeon within two weeks. When he has the arrangements made and is ready to go for surgery it will be 3 months from decision to procedure.
I’ve seen 3 specialists within the last year and quite the opposite from being denied procedures I have put a couple off while I consider if I want to undergo them.
When we took my son to emerg with a scare he saw a ped within an hour and the emerg was packed that day.
Our system may not be perfect but one only has to look to dentistry to see how private health care would work.

* sorry for the rambling post.
The garden is doing quite well. The herbs could actually do with being repotted. They are too big to have so many in one container. It is lovely to just walk out on the balcony and gather a collection of fresh herbs to throw into whatever I’m cooking.. The morning glory have taken right off. Should be a wonderful display in a few weeks. The beefsteak tomatoes will soon be as tall as me!
The birds love the trellis. Often is it just full of birds waiting their turn for the feeder, which at the moment needs topped up again.
A New Zealand couple were shocked to learn their 3 year old had bought an £8000 backhoe while they slept.
Sarah Quinlan told the BBC that she had been looking for toys online, and using an automatic log-in to an auction site.
But a shock was in store when she got up the next day.
“When I found an email from a guy who said ‘can you deposit the money?’ I thought – hang on – this isn’t quite what I expected,” she said.
The toddler had only first used the computer the week before. Good thing she wasn’t looking for stuffed animals who knows what she might have ended up with! 😉
