Rights, the Right doesn’t believe in them

08/04/2008 by Debra

Can you afford your rights?
Can you afford your rights?
In April of last year I blogged about the Court Challenges Program and this quote;
Rainer Knopff, a political scientist at the University of Calgary, said the program was “a biased boondoggle that had gone well past its `best before’ date.”

The program only funded groups on “one side” of the political spectrum while “socially conservative groups never got any money. Not a penny, as far as I know,” said Knopff.
He also echoed then-Treasury Board president John Baird’s suggestion, made in defending the decision to kill the program, that it made no sense for Ottawa to spend public money helping groups challenge its own legislation.
“I don’t want to pay for surrogate litigants,” said Knopff, arguing public interest groups should raise their own money for Charter cases. “If they can’t raise the money – tough.”

Today CTV has a story about the further erosion of rights in Canada;

OTTAWA — A Montreal court may be about to make Canadian legal history in a case that could see offenders considered guilty until proved innocent.

A bail hearing at the court this week is believed to be the first involving so-called “reverse onus,” in which a defendant must prove why they deserve less time behind bars and why they should be released on bail pending trial.

This ‘test case’ involves gangs. Naturally one chooses the circumstance least likely to garner public sympathy to launch such an attack. It goes without saying that any argument to democracy and rights will be met with an allegation of supporting gangs and violence. It being the case, unfortunately that some cannot hold more than one thought in their mind at a time. This law may start out as being about gangs and gun crime but it will not end there.

Image via Wikipedia

Dave Schroder of Edmonton’s Guardian Angels network thinks the reverse onus rule is “long overdue.”

“When somebody has demonstrated their lack of respect for Canadian law, we do have the right to expect them to be put away,” he said.

We certainly do have a right to expect criminals to be “put away”, right after they have been proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt by a jury of their peers.

I say this as someone whose life has been touched by violent crime. The criminals never even charged. While I still am affected by these crimes, I don’t believe the Canadian criminal system should be built upon whatever revenge fantasies I may hold.

Our rights and freedoms are being stripped away by those who value sound bite over substance, authoritarianism over democracy and big brother over individual freedom. It is time for us, all of us, to speak up before our right to speak is taken too.

Khadr Video Shames Canada

07/15/2008 by Debra

Omar Khadr
Omar Khadr

CBC today carries the story and video the CSIS interview with Omar Khadr. Although the video quality is poor it is obvious that this is an anguished young teen. He tries to tell the integrators of his need for medical care and is met with a smug superior attitude and a complete lack of empathy. He is then told that his breakdown is a “strategy”. I’d like to see the CSIS agent endure half of what this boy did and see what his “strategy” would be.

“We Canadians stand for compassion, we stand for the rule of law. And what you are seeing there is the abuse of the rule of law as Canadian courts have indicated about Canadians and Canada’s involvement in Guantanamo Bay,” lawyer Dennis Edney told CBC News.

Edney said Canadian officials should have asked Khadr about potential torture, but instead went into the interview without any help for the then teenage boy.

“We don’t do that in Canada and that shouldn’t have happened to this young, most vulnerable boy in Guantanamo,” the lawyer said.

He also said Khadr suffers from several injuries, including the loss of sight in one eye and difficulty with the other, as well as shrapnel and bullet wounds. [ ..CBC ]

Presumably the CSIS agent saw this picture of Khadr as he lay nearly dead on the battlefield. Not an adult soldier but a child brought into war. But Harper doesn’t care for children. He is already trying to put more Canadian youth in prison. Why should he care about one that he can easily get his lunatic fringe to smear? One even went so far on the CBC site as to say that even if Khadr were 6 years old we should kill him. And this person is walking free.

Harper continues to use following LIberal precedent as an excuse for not doing  the Canadian thing, the right thing, the humane thing, the just thing. He refuses to bring Khadr home because he says the Liberals didn’t. Well since when does Harper follow the Liberal play book? In Nuremburg “following orders” was not accepted as an excuse to commit crimes against humanity. How much less successful would following a political foes precedent be?

Khadr is the only western prisoner not claimed by their country. His continued presence there, and this video shames all Canadians.  Harper must either bring Khadr home or step down as Prime Minister. A leader who refuses to protect his own people has committed treason against them.

Ontario Housing disallows flag

07/15/2008 by Debra

Mark Murray, an ex-serviceman, is facing eviction from his subsided housing for flying the Canadian flag the local Royal Canadian Legion gave him last year. According to OHC; “the flag violates a rule requiring all subsidized properties to have a uniform appearance.” Because as we know “poor” people are bad and so should live in clinical, institutionalized settings just like criminals.

His MPP is Bob Runicman and his MP is Gordon Brown. Up until finding that out I had wondered why there wasn’t support forthcoming from his provincial or Federal reps. Guess supporting the troops is more a meme than a reality eh guys.

Humanists Award Honour To Morgantaler

07/11/2008 by Debra

Dr. Morgantaler to receive another award. This one from the Humanist Association of Canada. Press release below.

Kathy Meidell

Executive Director, Humanist Association of Canada

[1ft2b_caption id=”attachment_804″ align=”right” width=”150″ caption=”The Humanist Association of Canada”]The Humanist Association of Canada[/1ft2b_caption]TORONTO, July 10 — The Humanist Association of Canada (HAC) will be bestowing pro-choice champion, Dr Henry Morgentaler with the Lifetime Achievement award during its blockbuster 40th anniversary convention the weekend of August 2. This award honours Dr Morgentaler’s extraordinary efforts in advocating for health, dignity and human rights for all Canadians during his 40 years of service to the organization. For details, please see: www.humanists.ca

The organization is delighted that the timing of the Lifetime Achievement Award coincides with Dr Morgentaler receiving the 2008 Order of Canada award for his decades-long humanitarian work to improve healthcare for Canadian women. This award, our nation’s highest honour, comes on the 20th anniversary of the landmark decision by the Supreme Court of Canada that declared the nation’s archaic abortion laws unconstitutional.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper recently condemned the decision to award Dr Henry Morgentaler the Order of Canada saying that he feels it may trigger dissension among Canadians. The Humanist Association of Canada, however, feels that this prominent award will help unify Canadians – more precisely, those Canadians who believe in democracy, better healthcare, human rights, and respect for women.

The award ceremony will be taking place during the largest freethought convention in Canadian history: Saturday August 2 to Sunday August 3 at the InterContinental Yorkville Hotel at 220 Bloor Street West, Toronto. This anniversary celebration is especially meaningful to HAC as Dr Morgentaler was its first president in 1968.

Convention highlights include: great food, live music, comedy, a fabulous awards banquet, book-signings and presentations by 12 acclaimed speakers from across North America, including award-winning activists: Chris diCarlo, critical thinking powerhouse and winner of TV Ontario’s 2008 Professor of the Year award; Brian Alters, evolution education champion and co-host of popular CBC series “Project X”; Ellen Johnson, past President of American Atheists; Dan Barker, President of the Freedom from Religion Foundation; Dr Robert Buckman: cancer specialist and past member of Monty Python comedy troupe; and, of course, Dr Henry Morgentaler, Holocaust survivor and pro choice crusader.

The Humanist Association of Canada is a not-for-profit charitable organization that supports and promotes educational initiatives to advance critical-thinking and Humanist culture, social and outreach opportunities for non-believers, and advocacy for equality and fairness for all Canadians.

You have been weighed, you have been measured, and you have been found wanting

07/10/2008 by Debra

Once again Harper proves not up to the task of leadership. Quote Harper; Canada “frankly has no real alternative” to the U.S. legal process.

Excuse me?

We have no alternative but to allow one of our citizens to be tortured, disallowed proper counsel and defense for a charge that seems flimsier by the day, that should have been classed and treated as a child soldier.

Canada was the first to ratify the so-called Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child, a treaty that requires signatories to give special consideration to captured enemy fighters under the age of 18.

The treaty says they are to be segregated from adult combatants. As well, those who capture children must make every effort to reintegrate them into society.

One thing we do know for sure Canada “frankly has no real alternative” but to boot this poor excuse for a man out of the PM’s office and the sooner the better.

If you take away my rights, can I take away yours?

07/05/2008 by Debra

The anti-choice factions have been frothing at the mouth as of late emboldened by such things as Bill C-484, Bill C-537, and Bill C-338.

Prime Minister Harper promised that a Conservative government would not legislate on abortion, but this is exactly what is happening, not just with Bill C-484, but with two other Conservative private member bills introduced last fall. Bill C-338 would re-criminalize abortion by prohibiting abortions after 20 weeks gestation. Bill C-537 would guarantee the “right” of medical personnel to refuse to provide medical care for religious reasons, which would mostly restrict women’s ability to access contraception and abortion care.

Bill C-484 is a radical bill because it positions the fetus as a woman’s co-equal. By focussing on fetuses, not injured pregnant women, the bill is offensive to the full humanity of all women, not just pregnant women. The not-so-hidden agenda of the bill is to recognize the “rights of the unborn” so that abortion can be restricted in the future. Indeed, fetal personhood is a long-standing objective of the anti-abortion movement.

It is their view that nothing trumps the right of their god and men to force women to be brood mares the fetus. Regardless of how the pregnancy came into being, the age of the mother to be, or the health and emotional well being of the mother each little egg must be hatched.

These people feel they have a god given right to force their views and lifestyle choice upon others up to and including laws to make any deviation from their extremism a criminal act. This extremism includes the teaching of hate to those formerly precious eggs, now children. Hatred of gays, feminists, leftists, atheists and so on. I have blogged previously that although I believe such acts to be child abuse, I don’t believe the state has a place in ensuring “proper thoughts”. Perhaps though I was hasty. You see I know that were these sorts to ever come to power they, as other despots afore them, would not bat an eye if my children were wrenched from their home to brainwashed educated into their hatred religious beliefs. Therefore, I propose a private citizens bill. Bill C-404* [*404 on the net indicates an error. This is appropriate as we try to show the egg fanciers the error of their ways.] this bill would create the right to remove from any home children being taught hatred contrary to the laws of the land and the laws of the Jesus. To whit hatred against but not excluding others leftists, atheists, feminists and gays.

Remember;

Jesus loves the little children,
All the children of the world.
Red and yellow, black and white,
All are precious in His sight,
Jesus loves the little children of the world.

Children will also be removed from homes who believe in the parenting techniques of religious subversives such as Dr. Dobson;

In Chapter 4 Dobson goes into more detail about corporal punishment, recommending using objects (not the hand) to hit and whip children, starting as young as 15-18 months old for “defiance.”

A child’s right to a life free from the teachings of hatred and the results of such teaching far surpass those of anyone to practice religion. Look I have pictures of what happens when abuse is allowed unchecked…here, here and here.

Help protect our little ones, support Bill C-404.
