Harper teaching kids it's good to be a bully.
Harper teaching kids it's good to be a bully.
My son was watching YTV and came to me all upset. I asked him what was up and he said “now their putting it on kids shows”

Who is putting what on kids shows? I asked.

So I go look the Conservatools have a Dion attack ad on in the middle of Fairly Odd Parents. Great teach the kids that making fun and bullying are good things to do. Just when you thought they had reached the depths they plumb lower.

unbelieveable.

Harper’s Full of Ship Again

10/09/2008 by Debra

An article today in the Ottawa Citizen has this quote from Harper

Harper’s platform speech was billed as the most important of the campaign, but he might want to think about firing his analogy writer. “As the saying goes, it wasn’t raining when Noah built the ark. Which is why, when the rain came, Noah didn’t need to panic and he didn’t switch boats,” Harper said. He stopped short of saying that, like Noah, God speaks to him.

Seriously? Noah’s Ark?! That’s the image he wants to impose.

as brebis noire pointed out

“Any leader who brings up Noah’s ark at a time like this not only has an empathy deficit, but a deficit in political instincts as well.
Noah saved his family and two reps from every species. Everybody else drowned.”

Well at least we now know what his platform is.

Beavers Fight Climate Change

10/09/2008 by Debra

Finally getting the recognition they deserve Beavers have been shown to have a beneficial effect on the environment, says a study published in the Oct. issue of Western North American Naturalist. Long maligned for their damming ways, those dams have been found to provide habitat for song birds.

“We found that increasing density of beaver dams was associated with a diverse and abundant bird community and the wetland and streamside habitat these species depend on,” said Hilary Cooke, the study’s lead author who is now finishing her dissertation at the University of Alberta in Edmonton. “This habitat is critical to birds in semi-arid regions yet has been severely degraded or lost through much of the West. Our results suggest that management of beavers may be an important tool for restoring habitat and reversing bird declines.”

Beavers may also help as global warming depletes water tables;

“Beaver are an essential ecosystem engineer,” said co-author Steve Zack of the Wildlife Conservation Society. “Beavers help repair degraded stream habitats and their dams and associated ponds recharge local water tables and create wetlands. With our changing climate likely to mean increasing droughts in the West, managing ways to allow watersheds to act more like sponges will be a challenge.

Beaver are a powerful tool to be considered for that, and the associated benefits to other wildlife add to their value.

Renew your love for the Beaver!

Blood test for Down’s Syndrome in the Works.

10/09/2008 by Debra

Image via Wikipedia

A test is in the works which will identify Down syndrome earlier in pregnancy. This is great news for parents. For those that would make the choice to abort the earlier timeline means an easier procedure.

And for parents who choose to carry to term it means no risk of miscarriage. Some women choose not to get tested at all since they would carry the pregnancy anyway. For these women the test represents a way to be fully informed and have to become educated and set up support systems before the birth.

While it used to be assumed that children with Down’s syndrome had no ability to learn or to integrate into society, through the efforts and advocacy of parents and support workers this attitude has changed and now many children with Down’s are managing well.

Of course there are many degrees of severity and not all are so lucky.

Though some have raised the spectre of eugenics with this test it simply replaces invasive technologies already available.
