Freaky Fetishers

07/07/2008 by Debra

The dictionary defines fetish as; An abnormally obsessive preoccupation or attachment; a fixation. Of course it also defines it as; Something, such as a material object or a nonsexual part of the body, that arouses sexual desire and may become necessary for sexual gratification, but lets not go there.

The recent announcement of Dr. Morgantaler receiving an Order of Canada has brought out the fetus fetishers in full force. Sticky, sappy odes to the unborn and attacks on those who *gasp, shriek, swoon* actually see sex as a normal part of life. Babies are punishment for your sins sweet sexy mama er…. evil harlot. [quick aside; now are they adorable miracles from god, or punishments for sex? Make up your minds!]

At a recent Jesus Freak festival fetishers were provided with merchandise to help make them visible to other fetishers such as t-shirts with the ever popular holocaust message “and a baby suit proclaiming “Former Embryo.”” Now we are going to assume that the baby suit was for a baby, but one can never be sure. And it is perhaps a mark of the failure of abstinence education that they must point out that the ‘person’ in the stroller who no longer counts for much, was once an all powerful fetus.

Today in the Calgary Herald, Selina Renfrow writes about her CHOICE to carry her pregnancy to term. Never once recognizing the irony in her words.

At the age of 20 I was pregnant, single and living at home. It took me two months to decide what I was going to do; two months to choose a path for my life.
I chose to be a mother.

Pregnant woman in the shadows (BW image)Image via WikipediaMs. Renfrow speaks to her religious beliefs and how they guided her decision and I am happy that she had the choice in that decision. I am happy that there are not pregnancy police deciding whether or not she can have a baby. I am happy that women’s rights advocates have made society kinder to single moms. I am happy that she didn’t lose her job, family and reputation by having this child out of wedlock.

Now if only Ms Renfrow and others of her persuasion would recognize that others have the right to their choices as well. The woman pregnant from rape or incest, the teen pregnant because she hoped that sex would mean love, the single career woman like herself who is unprepared and unwilling to take on the responsibility of a child, the mother who already has children and cannot afford one more, perhaps financially perhaps emotionally, the woman with a medical condition for whom a pregnancy may mean a devastating result to her health, as Ms. Renfrow points out birth control can fail does that mean that one is fated to pregnancy regardless of impact?

Choice it’s what separates us from fascism, political or reproductive.

Sex with Robots? Does not compute

06/29/2008 by Debra

Sex with robots?

Shocking but utterly convincing, Love and Sex with Robots provides insights that are surprisingly relevant to our everyday interactions with technology. This is science brought to life, and Levy makes a compelling and titillating case that the entities we once deemed cold and mechanical will soon become the objects of real companionship and human desire. Anyone reading the book with an open mind will find a wealth of fascinating material on this important new direction of intimate relationships, a direction that, before long, will be regarded as perfectly normal

Levy goes so far as to imagine relationships, reproduction and child rearing with your robotic significant other.

Levy wouldn’t exclude robots from child rearing either. “You can’t envisage traditional reproduction with a robot, but technology will develop and there will be some sort of process that involves a robot contributing to the personality and psychological makeup of a child,” he said.

Now this could lead to some interesting scenarios. Would this put a new face on the sex trade? Could they be used as surrogate wombs?

…I believe that one of
the most widespread reasons humans will develop strong emotional attachments to robots
is the natural desire to have more close friends…

Presumably they would be computerized what happens when your partner crashes? Will we have anti robot marriage protests?

Levy suggests that the child quality of imbuing inanimate objects with feelings is not lost when we become adults and that the strong attachment people have to such things as their computers will easily transfer to friendships and partnerships when such items are endowed with human qualities.

It is certainly an interesting theory.

Heinz: There are other kinds!

06/25/2008 by Debra

This ad [created by the AMV BBDO ad company] is fantastic, unfortunately it fell victim to the homophobic atmosphere that even a new millennium hasn’t shaken.

Interestingly enough the ad can’t be shown around children’s programming bacause mayo is a high fat product and can’t be marketed to children.

George Carlin May 12, 1937 – June 22, 2008

06/23/2008 by Debra

George Carlin was never one to shy away from controversy. As a lover of comedy I have come to feel almost as if I know him, yet I’ve never even been to a show. I will miss him greatly. Sincere condolences to his family.

Here are some videos showing George talking about some of my favorite subjects.

Religion

Abortion

and of course the Seven Words

Irony is not completely dead

06/08/2008 by Debra

Photo taken by me in August, 2006.Image via WikipediaDavid Warren soils the Ottawa Citizen before it even reaches the bird cage with this piece of hate filled tripe “It’s feminist slander that men are inherently violent”.The fallacies and utter nonsense spewed in the piece do not even warrant comment, though the fact that such a piece of drivel would get published may.

More to the point is the ironic juxtaposition of a breaking story of a woman killed, two small children being taken by children’s services and a man being lead away in handcuffs. Now I’m sure that the man is completely innocent (certainly till he has his day in court.) No doubt this evil woman died of her own hand and found a way to make it look like the man did it.

Just as a final thought. I wonder how these “oooo the evul wimmins is stealing my ballz” types are handling their female counterparts using “feminist” talking points about the dangers of being beaten or killed by partners during pregnancy in an effort to score points for Bill C-484? Maybe they just close their eyes and think of England.

WordPress themes and other things

05/19/2008 by Debra

I’ve been lax on my political blogging, though much of what I’m reading makes you wonder if the human race has jumped the shark.

What I have been doing is building WordPress themes Serenity was my first one. I had thought about calling it “it’s my first day”(Simpsons fans will get that)

The second and third are a wide and narrow version of the same theme. It’s called Dark Room (920px version here)

I’ve also built a theme for a contest so can’t show it here. Probably shouldn’t even have mentioned it.

I’ve also been doing a lot of living in the land of plugins both WordPress and Firefox. Plugin developers are truly unsung heroes of the web.

I think I’m going to work on a theme for Canadian political blogging next. Anyone have any ideas they would like to see incorporated into something like that?
