Habitat for Humanity takes back house

01/04/2007 by Debra

A couple were kicked out of their H4H home because they had some difficulty and it seems never managed to get back on track.

Well these are the things that happen to low income people. One thing can set you back for years.

Story from CBC

A non-profit organization dedicated to helping low-income families own homes has evicted a Kingston, Ont., couple after they fell behind on their payments.

Habitat for Humanity Kingston executive director Sandra Berg confirmed that it is the first time the Kingston affiliate of the international organization has evicted any of its residents.

Police helped the organization ensure that Theresa and Kevin Orr left the home late Tuesday afternoon.

Theresa Orr said she and her husband have lived in the building since 2004, and fell behind on their monthly rent payments due to health problems and a job loss.

But she said she now has a stable job, has paid back what she owes and has been making regular rental payments since 2005, and wants to negotiate with Habitat Kingston.

“In politics, what begins in fear usually ends in folly.”

01/04/2007 by Debra

I see much of what is occurring lately to be a fear response.

Can’t raise minimum wage for fear that business will suffer.

Does business not suffer when people do not have money to spend?

This is the obvious first step on the journey to the decline of capitalism. First you create an underclass, give them just a little, instill them with fear of having nothing and make them fight each other for the pittance that barely allows them to keep body and soul together. Girls..is there nothing they can’t do?

We don’t actually crack backs. It’s merely an adjustment…OK, you’re going to hear a loud cracking sound.(Dr. Steve)

“Daughters linked to prostate risk” read the headlines.

Turns out that one study has come up with stats they have no particular answer for

The Israeli team found men with three daughters and no sons were up to 60% more likely to develop prostate cancer.

But the Journal of the National Cancer Institute study suggests the cause may be the male “Y” sex chromosome, not the act of having either a son or daughter.

In fact at one point it is hypothesized that

Since prostate problems are often only detected when a man attends for routine health screening, they suggested that it was possible that having a predominantly female family might encourage a man to be more health-conscious.

Nope must be more than that

“We also need to uncover exactly what it is about the Y chromosome, which only men have, that might make men who are diagnosed with prostate cancer also more likely to have fathered girls rather than boys.

and there’s this

The Prostate Cancer Charity head of policy and research Chris Hiley said: “This is an interesting study – it certainly attracts the attention, but it doesn’t yet translate into useful advice for men until other complex genetic studies are done.

More study would seem the way to go, though ever so much more boring than making it seem like girls cause cancer. Used to only be cooties..must be the new girl technology.

And even though we just said so

“In the meantime no-one should rush off with the idea that girls give their fathers prostate cancer.”

Scared yet?..now?…how about now?

01/02/2007 by Debra

Now we don’t know who, when or where.. we do know

“The technical capability required to construct and use a simple RDD is practically trivial, compared to that of a nuclear explosive device or even most chemical or biological weapons,” the CSIS study says.

A homemade radiological weapon could consist of a conventional explosive laced with radioactive material commonly found at universities, medical and research laboratories or industrial sites.

But we don’t know what they are waiting for

“Indeed, it is quite surprising that the world has not yet witnessed such an attack,” the study says, adding “it appears that we are positively overdue for one.”

Oh yes and apparently they have figured out what really matters to the leaders in the west

The intelligence service points to the notion terrorist thinking has shifted from the desire to inflict mass casualties to “one of inflicting severe economic damage.”

Victory for same sex parents

01/02/2007 by Debra

An Ontario court has ruled a boy can legally have two mom’s and a dad.

TORONTO — An Ontario boy can legally have two mothers and a father, the province’s highest court ruled Tuesday.

The same-sex partner of the child’s biological mother went to court seeking to also be declared a mother of the boy.

After hearing arguments in 2003, Superior Court Justice David Aston dismissed the application saying he didn’t have the jurisdiction to rule in the case.

Court was told the child has three parents: his biological father and mother (identified in court documents as B.B. and C.C., respectively) and C.C.’s partner, the appellant A.A.

A.A. and C.C. have been in a stable same-sex union since 1990. In 1999, they decided to start a family with the assistance of their friend B.B.

The two women would be the primary caregivers of the child, but they believed it would be in the child’s best interests that B.B. remain involved in the child’s life.

How wonderful for this child to have such caring parents.

And so it ends..

notebook

I had a bad feeling about this year, and I was unfortunately right about that.

Personally I lost a mom, a cat, two jobs, and had two serious health scares.

Politically saw the election of Harper and crew, a renewed and emboldened attack on women’s rights and freedoms, the realization that though the wheel was invented, many still want to put corners on it and have a nuanced discussion over who should be using it, continued death and destruction by the powerful who stand to gain more.. upon the many who have nothing left to lose, and the death of a puppet who had turned on his masters.
