Heinz: There are other kinds!

06/25/2008 by Debra

This ad [created by the AMV BBDO ad company] is fantastic, unfortunately it fell victim to the homophobic atmosphere that even a new millennium hasn’t shaken.

Interestingly enough the ad can’t be shown around children’s programming bacause mayo is a high fat product and can’t be marketed to children.

Irony is not completely dead

06/08/2008 by Debra

Photo taken by me in August, 2006.Image via WikipediaDavid Warren soils the Ottawa Citizen before it even reaches the bird cage with this piece of hate filled tripe “It’s feminist slander that men are inherently violent”.The fallacies and utter nonsense spewed in the piece do not even warrant comment, though the fact that such a piece of drivel would get published may.

More to the point is the ironic juxtaposition of a breaking story of a woman killed, two small children being taken by children’s services and a man being lead away in handcuffs. Now I’m sure that the man is completely innocent (certainly till he has his day in court.) No doubt this evil woman died of her own hand and found a way to make it look like the man did it.

Just as a final thought. I wonder how these “oooo the evul wimmins is stealing my ballz” types are handling their female counterparts using “feminist” talking points about the dangers of being beaten or killed by partners during pregnancy in an effort to score points for Bill C-484? Maybe they just close their eyes and think of England.

8 Year old asks for divorce

04/12/2008 by Debra

Nojoud Muhammed Nasser arrived at court by herself on Wednesday, April 2, looking for a judge to handle her case against her father, Muhammed Nasser, who forced her two months ago to marry Faez Ali Thamer, a man 22 years her senior. The child also asked for a divorce, accusing her husband of sexual and domestic abuse.

According to Yemeni law, Nojoud cannot prosecute, as she is underage. However, court judge Muhammed Al-Qathi heard her complaint and subsequently ordered the arrests of both her father and husband.

Now there will be some who will see this as an excuse to loose racist nonsense, just one glaring example from a yahoo thread;

These people are uncouth savages. Always have been…always will.

Human rights and the rights of women are virtually non-existant in this place and others that surround it. And yet you have imbicilic females from the U.S. and Europe that marry these men and are shocked to their roots when the first time they want to go out in public they’re beaten sensless by their husbands because it’s ‘custom’ for you to hold a position in his and the other male family members lives that is no better than a goat or a piece of furniture. Property…that’s all.

Stay on your side of the world. And we should be staying on ours as well.

My one would almost think that these sorts gave a rats ass about women and girls. Never fear the National Pestulance comes along to dispell that notion in no uncertain terms.

Seems like this is a cause Canada’s feminists should get behind — assuming they’re not too busy protesting laws that would protect unborn children from murder.

This is a heartrending story of a an 8 year old subjected to rape, to multiple beatings to things no child should ever have to bear. It is also a story of bravery and survival. An example of the power of just one voice. Yet the right wing radicals over at NP are climbing on this brave girls back to shout anti-feminist and anti-abortion slogans. The headline on Jonathan Kay’s story dubs her “world’s bravest 8-year-old feminist” , we all know how the NP and their rabid readers feel about feminists, so they appear to be actively attacking this girl. Of course appearances can be deceiving and one hopes that is the case here.

As for young Nojoud Muhammed Nasser;

“We are planning to put her in Dar Al-Rahama [an non-governmental organization that works with children], where she can have a better life and education. We do not want her family to pay her expenses, as they are poor.”

I believe this girl could have a very bright future ahead of her.

Faux News and Homophobic raving

01/24/2008 by Debra

Faux reporting John Gibson used Heath Ledger’s passing as an excuse to launch into hateful, stupid homophobic “jokes”.

“Playing an audio clip of the iconic quote, ‘I wish I knew how to quit you’ from Ledger’s gay romance movie Brokeback Mountain, Gibson disdainfully quipped, ‘Well, he found out how to quit you.’

Go to Queer Thoughts for the full story and information on how to register your disgust.

Don’t Worry, Be Happy

01/19/2008 by Debra

An article in The Star today tells us to stop focusing on headlines (ironic no? ) and recognize that things make the headlines because they are less likely to happen on a regular basis;

A: I call that “headline bias” – when something makes the news, people think it happens a lot. But the reason something makes the headlines is because it doesn’t happen a lot.

To my mind, public reaction is not in co-ordination with the actual statistics.

Toronto is actually quite a safe city, better than most American and Canadian cities. And the level of violent crime has stayed pretty steady over the past few years.

Having moved from fairly small Lindsay to fairly big Hamilton, I can’t say I feel any less safe here. And so in the spirit of the article enjoy some Bobby Mcferrin;

Uniform Murder

11/15/2007 by Debra

Let’s start with a definition.

Murder:

  • To kill (another human) unlawfully.
    To kill brutally or inhumanly.
  • Which we will follow up with a snuff film… er video of an incident. {opens Windows Media Player}

    Nothing less than the word murder applies to what appears in that video. This was not a life or death action on behalf of the RCMP. This was not an armed and dangerous offender bent on cop killing.

    What on earth prevented the simple act of phoning for an interpreter from entering their minds? What was the rush to take down in such a violent fashion and then heap further abuse upon a downed, hand cuffed, unarmed, visitor to our country?

    Had this film shown a similar number of young persons, most particularly of colour, engaging in a similar act of aggression resulting in death there would be no end of calls for justice, for lack of mercy, for lifelong imprisonment.

    The act of donning a uniform, seems these days to give one carte blanche to engage in whatever thuggery one chooses in the name of the ‘greater good’. Yet no good seems to be coming from it.

    This was a pointless and senseless death. It is a tragedy for the family and a wake up call for Canadians.
    We have the right to expect more from those given the privilege of serving their communities. Those who make and keep the laws must never be allowed to be above them.

    Murder does not cease to be a crime simply because it was committed by someone sporting a uniform.
