International Fetus Day

03/05/2008 by Debra

Saturday March 8th aka International Women’s Day. How did the predominantly male parliament recognize this upcoming event? By voting, either through direct action or abstention, to allow the clock to be turned back on women’s reproductive rights.

Those who like to spin sentiment as truth say that those crazy radical feminists are on the war path against mommies again. Bullshit!

This about protecting the rights of all women. Especially those who chose to become pregnant. Feminists have studied, lobbied and fought for years for protections for women. Now this same government who so happily dismantled SWC is claiming to have women’s interests at heart? Bullshit!

The same laws that are being put forward here are being used to prosecute women in the United States of America. And other countries with similar breeding laws are also making criminals out of women. Women who’s pregnancies are not the stuff of Anne Geddes books. This is protecting women? Bullshit!

Mark Hasiuk in his rush to do a hatchet job on Joyce Arthur writes;

Sadly, for a relatively small number of pregnant women, life’s final scene ends with a violent act usually perpetrated by their closest male ally. Bill C-484 will recognize the sanctity of human life in its most innocent and vulnerable form, and further punish some of society’s most despicable offenders.

In their opposition to the bill, pro-choice activists seek to deny justice for abused women who weighed their options and chose life.

Perhaps Mr. Hasiuk should have become a butcher rather than a writer. Being a writer generally requires one research the facts. The fact is that Bill C-484 contains a provision that any lawyer worth his salt could use to get his client off. To wit;

(2) An offence that would otherwise be an offence under paragraph (1)(a) may be reduced to an offence under paragraph (1)(b) if the person who committed the offence did so in the heat of passion caused by sudden provocation within the meaning of section 232.

Combined with the fact that courts already have provision to take violence against a pregnant women more seriously, combined with the fact that Canada does not (as yet!) have consecutive sentencing. Combined with this statement “(5) It is not a defence to a charge under this section that the child is not a human being.” and statements such as these from reproductive fascists, “If passed this bill . . . would be a key step in recriminalizing abortion.” To say that this bill is about protection not about criminalizing abortion is grade A, 100%, unadulterated BULLSHIT!

To the Liberal politicians who stood in the house today and voted for this, and for those like Dion who ducked the responsibility to defeat it, I say shame! Shame on you for marking International Women’s Day by resurrecting the concept of biology as destiny.

It is hard to choose priorities–too bad you chose Harper Government™ ones.

One Body. One Person. One Count.

02/09/2008 by Debra

There is currently before the House a private members bill that “would amend the Criminal Code to allow separate homicide charges to be laid in the death of a foetus when a pregnant woman is attacked.”

This in effect suggests that a foetus be defined as a separate “person” from the mother. This definition of ‘personhood’ would immediately open the door to criminalizing abortion and those having/performing them.

This bill is being brought forward by a special interest group.

Ken Epp is a member of the Campaign Life Coalition.

As Raymond Gravel, a Bloc MP and a priest said;

the member putting it forward is part of a pro-life group, the Campaign Life Coalition, which in my view is a rather extreme fanatical group, when it comes to life.”

I for one do not wish extreme fanatics dictating my choices. Such action leads to fascism.

Anti-Choice Fascism

02/09/2008 by Debra

“The fetus is the property of the entire society… anyone who avoids having children is a deserter who abandons the laws of national continuity.” Romanian dictator Nicolai Ceausescu

A 1966 campaign to increase the population by banning abortion, divorce and birth control (the latter to be physically verified monthly by gynecologists) went horribly wrong after a doubling of the birth rate was not accompanied by any basic medical improvements. Babies sickened and died for lack of medical care, food, and maternity beds. Desperate women braved machine guns to flee to Hungary, leaving a legacy of millions of hungry orphans, many of them seriously retarded through neglect. In the 1980’s, the country succumbed to an AIDS epidemic of staggering proportions thanks to Ceausescu’s refusal to admit the problem existed.

Choose Truth

Ah the exploding heads have stopped by again. Jim from the Moral Science Club stopped by. Jim presumes he can dictate laws which do not even pertain to his own country. And which do not pertain to a body part he owns. This was the flaming bag of dog shit Jimmy left on the doorstep in response to this post.

Abortion is not about a culture of death, it is not about hating children or being sinners. It is about controlling ones health, ones life, ones future.

That’s all the Nazis were doing by getting rid of the Jews – it’s about controlling their economy, their lives, their future.

One day, when you know better, you will be ashamed. Your grandchildren, should any survive, will call this the Abortion Holocaust.

How wonderful that you choose to deny the importance of both abortion and genocide by attempting to link the two. Against abortion Jim? Don’t fucking have one.

Oh and clean up this mess will ya?

Celebrate Choice

01/28/2008 by Debra

Today marks the 20th anniversary of the right to reproductive liberty.

Abortion is not about a culture of death, it is not about hating children or being sinners. It is about controlling ones health, ones life, ones future.

There is a mistaken belief that if abortion were completely outlawed no more abortions would ever be preformed. This of course is ridiculous nonsense. Women have always practised birth control and abortion. And would continue to do so. [Read more…] about Celebrate Choice

Blogging for Choice

01/22/2008 by Debra

Today Americians who believe in freedom and democracy celebrate the day that women were given a right to reproductive liberty.

At a time when so much talk centres around bringing democracy, freedom, women’s rights, to other countries, it is ironic that those things are being scaled back in America itself.

{The death of habeas corpus
Wire Tapping
limiting abortion rights
Indifference to equal pay just a small sampling}

The vocal minorities and special interest groups have organized while decent people just assumed that what was obviously right would continue. Unfortunately the courts and various places of political representation are now stacked with those who would have America become a theocracy. Whose idea of reproductive choice is whether to do it with the lights off or on. And who would happily revert to days when scores of women were on drugs in order to cope with the drudgery and danger which was their lives.

The slanderous sexist and misogynist comments around Hilary Clintons’ campaign is a glaring example of low esteem in which these right-wing, anti-choice, anti-democratic types hold women. It may be amusing for those women in the anti-choice to see their political foes treated thusly, however, they need to bear in mind that these men think pretty much the same way about them.

It is time to fight back. It is time to remember the women who died because they had no choice, because a piece of flesh within her was considered more important than her life. A time when constant pregnancy made women weak and many succumbed to death from hemorrhage.
The step family is not a new invention, men remarried, families blended, this is not an invention of feminism as the misinformed would like to believe.

Birth control is also under attack. There will be no peace until women have lost all the rights so long fought for. It may start with glurgy soft focus pictures of pregnancy and newborns, but it will end only when the jackboot of patriarchy is once again firmly lodged on the throats of women everywhere.

It is your body, your choice, your life, your future. Defend it!
