Connecticut Ok’s Gay Marriage

11/12/2008 by Debra

Judge Jonathan Silbert ruled same sex marriage legal basing his decision on a Supreme Court ruling in October.

The Connecticut Supreme Court ruled 4-3 on Oct. 10 that same-sex couples have the right to wed rather than accept a civil union law designed to give them the same rights as married couples.

This was fantastic news for those who had challenged the law against same sex marriage.

The judge’s order marks “the end of a very long journey toward equality,” said their attorney, Bennett Klein.

“Each of the plaintiffs asked me to convey to the court how proud they are to be citizens of this state,” Klein said.

Not everyone was happy of course,

The Family Institute of Connecticut, a political action group that opposes gay marriage, condemned the high court’s decision as undemocratic.

Undemocratic!? Ok then.

Answers.com gives 4 definitions of democratic,

1. Of, characterized by, or advocating democracy: democratic government; a democratic union.
2. Of or for the people in general; popular: a democratic movement; democratic art forms.
3. Believing in or practicing social equality: [believe this applies best]
4. Democratic Of, relating to, or characteristic of the Democratic Party.

none of these definitions seem to fit those of the Family Institute of Connecticut. psst maybe consulting a dictionary before releasing press statements would help

A Historic Moment for America

11/05/2008 by Debra

November 4th, 2008 a history making night for the United States of America, as for the first time ever Americans elected a black man to the highest office in the land. News footage showing tears steaming down the faces of those who never thought they would live to see such a thing could have failed to touch only the hardest of hearts.

President Elect Barack Obama gave an acceptance speech with a message of hope, of inclusiveness, of an awareness that he represents all the people not just those that voted for him, that has not been seen for some time.

Of course the American economy is tanking, there are wars, there is a level of hatred toward those not seen as “true Americans” reminiscent of the McCarthy era and so President Obama faces a great many challenges. He may not wholly live up to the hopes and dreams that have been pinned upon him. For now though there is joy and celebration. Hope for an end to blatant corruption, abuses of power and an almost sociopathic disregard for the well being of the people.

Congratulations to Barack Obama, his family and all the black families in the U.S. who can now say to their sons and daughters that one day you too could become President.

I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.”

I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia, the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood.

I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a state sweltering with the heat of injustice, sweltering with the heat of oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice.

I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.

I have a dream today!

Rural Politics

07/08/2008 by Debra

Image via MorguefileRural areas of Canada and the U.S. are strongholds for Conservative/Reform/Republican politics. Words like liberal, welfare, rights, environmentalism are bandied about like slurs, while abstract concepts like pullling yourself up by your bootstraps, making your own work, and loyalty to your country and used almost as religious mantras and identifiers of the true believers. Spin doctors are quick to latch on to this blind faith and give impassioned speeches about the farmer, the way things were, the heartland. But do they really have their best interests at heart? Time and again it seems the answer is no.

Travel back with me to Alberta circa 2004 when having been promised a major bail out from the government farmers found out that;

…more than 10 per cent of the province’s $400 million in mad cow aid went to two meat-packing companies: Lakeside Farm Industries and Cargill Foods. The province’s agriculture minister says they got the biggest cheques because they have the most invested in the industry.

CBC

…Phil Agre wrote [..] “Conservatism is the domination of society by an aristocracy … [it] is incompatible with democracy, prosperity and civilization in general. It is a destructive system of inequality and prejudice that is founded on deception and has no place in the modern world.”…

That doesn’t sound like they value the Canadian farmer above their corporate buddies now does it?

Now what about that “respected” think tank the C.D. Howe Institute and their report that Canada Post should be privatized? A decision that the Harper administration seems set to move on.
From the report, “..First, it is not clear that the USO requires strictly uniform prices and services across regions. As with other goods or services provided to remote or sparsely populated communities, one of the burdens of residing in such communities is the additional transportation and communication costs of providing goods and services over longer distances. The costs of travel to a hospital, for example, or the cost or scarcity of public transportation, are more burdensome for rural communities…”

What this is saying is the postal rates will increase exponentially the further away from a major center that you are. And in some instances you may have to travel to a designated area to pick up your mail. Said designated area not likely the local town post office you deal with now.

Image via WikipediaThe problem is that private companies do not care about the citizenry as whole. They care about the bottom line and ways to inflate it. Providing service and miles of wire to a few scattered homes is not in their shareholders best interests. And so while the report on Canada Post assumes that the slack will be taken up by internet transactions they fail to recognize that most rural homes rely on dial up service which is not the ideal way to conduct business online. The takeover of BCE seems to be presenting no improvement for rural service either.

Bell Aliant could be sold if the new owners aren’t interested in rural wireline service, or they might purchase the stake it doesn’t already own.

CTV
The report also presumes that everyone has access to a computer or knowledge of how to use one. CAPS programs which are especially useful in rural areas are regularly being scaled back, underfunded and at risk of being scrapped altogether.

The Harper government has shown utter contempt for grain farmers.

From GrainAction.ca

In June, for the third time in 11 months, a federal court ruled that his government willfully broken Canadian laws. In October 2006, the PM erased the CWB’s right to speak freely to the farmers it serves.

Keep in mind that any communication with farmers is paid for by farmers, not taxpayers, and the Wheat Board is controlled by farmers.

Ruling on the gag order case, Federal Court Justice Robert T. Hughes was shocked by the government’s actions, and said, in part, “It is entirely clear … that the (government) directive (was) motivated principally to silencing the wheat board…”.

The Harper government has slashed proposed Canadian Grain Commission funding by up to 67% in some areas – putting at risk vital programs that protect producers and Canada’s international reputation for quality grain.

The proposed cuts are in line with the Harper government’s plans, but legislation (Bill C-39) to gut the Canadian Grain Commission has not yet been approved by Parliament. Now that the House of Commons has adjourned for the summer, the government has no business carrying through with these planned cuts.

Please join with us to urge Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz to reverse his government’s planned cuts.

I was often surprised when I was living in a rural area at the tory talking points that were repeated as gospel based on the assumption that the government represented their views and their concerns. Yet so often this was not the case.

Many women on farms work in the closest town to supplement family income and require daycare. Yet they voted in droves for a government that not only refused more spaces but cut some of the precious few there were.

These are but a few of the ways this government fails those who support them.

Other parties need to stop letting the ‘Conservative’ governments set the talking points. They need to show rural communities real interest, real support and peel back the facade exposing the reality of a government whose true loyalties follow the money.

American Life League quashes multi-family affordable housing project

06/04/2008 by Debra

Image via WikipediaPlanned Parenthood in Florida was required to prove the presence of multi-family housing in order to get zoning permits. In an effort to meet the requirements and be good American citizens they contacted Habitat for Humanity and offered to sell them the land for 10 dollars. Habitat agreed and a deal was struck.

Now most people would think that affordable housing for Floridian families was a good thing. Not so the American Life League. No the ALL feels that once out of the womb you’re pretty much on your own.

And so they started their hate campaign and encouraged other vagina police to put an end to this project forthwith. Known for their creative use of polls one can just imagine the number of repeat phone calls, letters, emails etc that HH received. Unfortunately the Sarasota Habitat for Humanity saw caving to religious extremists as more important than providing housing for needy families.

In his email touting this “victory” as a good thing, Michael Hichborn says of ALL

It is the largest grassroots Catholic pro-life organization in the United States and is committed to the protection of all innocent human beings from the moment of creation to natural death.

From the moment of creation, eh? So we can look forward then to enormous prayer protests against their god for allowing all those miscarriages and therefore being the largest abortion provider of all.

Natural death? Again we will look forward to seeing the ALL out protesting the war, the NRA, the neonatal units trying to keep extreme preemies alive, and no doubt they will support anyone who finds themselves in the same situation as Terri Schiavo’s husband. All those tubes and breathing devices are certainly not natural.

Of course that will not happen. What Michael meant to say was that the American Life League is committed to policing women’s vaginas and forcing pregnancy and supporting rights for all life..for all people.. for eggs and fetuses.

Hold your heads proud no-lifers and don’t even think of all the families who lost out on housing. Hell if they wanted housing they should have stayed in the womb, then ALL would give a shit.

Choose Truth

02/05/2008 by Debra

Ah the exploding heads have stopped by again. Jim from the Moral Science Club stopped by. Jim presumes he can dictate laws which do not even pertain to his own country. And which do not pertain to a body part he owns. This was the flaming bag of dog shit Jimmy left on the doorstep in response to this post.

Abortion is not about a culture of death, it is not about hating children or being sinners. It is about controlling ones health, ones life, ones future.

That’s all the Nazis were doing by getting rid of the Jews – it’s about controlling their economy, their lives, their future.

One day, when you know better, you will be ashamed. Your grandchildren, should any survive, will call this the Abortion Holocaust.

How wonderful that you choose to deny the importance of both abortion and genocide by attempting to link the two. Against abortion Jim? Don’t fucking have one.

Oh and clean up this mess will ya?

Faux News and Homophobic raving

01/24/2008 by Debra

Faux reporting John Gibson used Heath Ledger’s passing as an excuse to launch into hateful, stupid homophobic “jokes”.

“Playing an audio clip of the iconic quote, ‘I wish I knew how to quit you’ from Ledger’s gay romance movie Brokeback Mountain, Gibson disdainfully quipped, ‘Well, he found out how to quit you.’
