Nine Year Old Canadian in Jail

02/24/2007 by Debra

Majid and his nine-year old son Kevin are Iranian immigrants currently being held at the Hutto detention center. They’ve been forcibly detained since their plane was forced to make an emergency landing in Puerto Rico as they made their way to Canada. Kevin says: “I want to be free. I want go to outside. I want to go home to Canada.”

Please see this post on Verbena19’s blog for more details and how to contact Peter Mackay to get action this situation.

Head of Cartoon Network Resigns

02/10/2007 by Debra

Obviously someone had to take the fall.

In my estimation it should have been the authorities who treated a bunch of light brights like a terrorist thread.

It was they who wasted thousands or millions of dollars (depending on news story) to “take care” of a non event.

The excuse of THE POST 9/11 WORLD is getting more tired that Ross’s “We were on a break” refrain.

Apparently before Sept. 11 nothing bad ever happened to anyone anywhere in the world.

Now all is to be feared. How do you know that Tickle Me Elmo™ isn’t actually an al qaeda spy? Who laughs like that anyway?

The constant terrorist fear mongering is like listening to a hypochondriac friend. Enough already.

Yes there are terrorists, have been for quite some time. All over the world. None to date have been known to have an affinity for either cartoons, light brights or situations that call attention to what they are planning to do.

It is wonderful they found someone to take the fall. It is just too bad they got the wrong person.

Boys willingly submitted to rape according to O’Reilly

02/07/2007 by Debra

How can you willing submit to rape?

Well only a mind as complex as Billies can answer that.

He has been asked to be a key note speaker at a missing and exploited children’s group fund raiser.

As he is exploiting these boys regularly on his show I suppose he is a natural choice. That is if you are trying to understand the mind of someone who exploits children.

Oh noes!! I see wires

02/01/2007 by Debra

Post 9/11 seems to have become code for “We’re stupid, paranoid, overzealous idiots”

“Everyone can play a part by holding Turner Broadcasting to account for today’s events,” Suffolk District Attorney Daniel Conley said. “Viewers, advertisers, license holders, can and should make clear to them this sort of behavior is reckless, irresponsible and illegal.”

“Commerce was disrupted, transportation routes were paralyzed, residents were stranded and relatives across the nation were in fear for their loved ones in the city of Boston,” Conley said.

Two men have been arrested and a lawsuit is pending against Turner broadcasting, all over an advertising stunt.

Boxes resembling Light Brights were set up in strategic locations to promote the Cartoon Network show, Aqua Teen Hunger Force.

Two men involved in planning and executing the stunt have been arrested, the Massachusetts attorney general Martha Coakley has confirmed. The charges they face include a felony – placing a hoax device that caused panic – and a separate count of disorderly conduct.

snip

It remains a mystery as to why a full security alert was called on Wednesday over advertising devices that had been present in Boston – and other major US cities including Atlanta, Philadelphia, New York and Los Angeles – for the past two weeks, although Coakley attributed it to the devices having a “very sinister appearance” and “wires”.

OMG!!! WTF!!!!!111!! BBQ!!!111!! It’s got wires run!!!!!!!11

Blog for Choice Day

01/22/2007 by Debra

Today is the 34th anniversary of Roe v Wade.

While this is predominately a celebration for American women, I believe that women worldwide can share in the celebration.

In the words of Virginia Woolf, “As a woman I have no country. As a woman my country is the whole world.”

The topic this year is a simple one, “why I am pro-choice.”

I am pro – choice because I believe children have a right to know they were wanted. That they weren’t born because of some imagined obligation to church or to god or because some law ruled their mother had to carry them to term.

I am pro – choice because I do not believe that my daughters have less right to decide their futures than my sons.

The simple answer is I am pro choice because I could not be anything else.

I have written to this subject before here, here, and here
to name a few.

I would say to sum up those posts that abortion is a woman’s right. A human right.

A society which would seek to suppress human rights is neither democratic nor just.

And human rights are not up for discussion or debate, they just inherently are.

I always thought the future would be a lot more fun

01/18/2007 by Debra

Yesterday over on Canada’s Debate I took the “Which science-fiction writer are you?” test.

My result,

John Brunner

His best known works are dystopias — vivid realizations of the futures we want to avoid.

So in keeping with that I present the following possible dystopic futures. [Read more…] about I always thought the future would be a lot more fun
