Crying judge UPDATE

Roy Pearson has lost his case against Custom Cleaners. In her ruling,

Judge Judith Bartnoff wrote 23 pages dissecting and dismissing Pearson’s claim that he was defrauded by the owners of Custom Cleaners and their “Satisfaction Guaranteed” sign.

“A reasonable consumer would not interpret ‘Satisfaction Guaranteed’ to mean that a merchant is required to satisfy a customer’s unreasonable demands or to accede to demands that the merchant has reasonable grounds to dispute,” the ruling said. ” . . . The plaintiff is not entitled to any relief whatsoever.”

the tearful judge may well lose more than his pants;

Financially, he could soon be on the hook for tens of thousands of dollars in legal fees incurred by the owners of Customer Cleaners. Attorneys for the Chungs have said they will seek such payments, as well as sanctions against Pearson for bringing the lawsuit. Bartnoff said in her ruling that she would decide those issues after both sides have filed their motions, counter-motions and legal briefs.

Professionally, Pearson could find himself out of his $96,000-a-year job as an administrative law judge for the District government

Celebrity Stalking

06/25/2007 by Debra

Usually you hear of celebrities being stalked, however, AR Media has learned of a shocking case of stalking by a celebrity.

Can you tell us what happened Bob?

Well I was just sitting around watching the Jays minding my own business when I thought I heard something on the porch. I opened the door and there was David Suzuki changing my porch bulb.

I was kinda like WTF? Turns out he had engaged the help of the Neighbourhood Association and everyone was turning on their new light bulbs at the same time. It looked sorta cool. I walked with him down the street because I wasn’t too sure of my families safety. He seemed nice enough, told me I had the power, and left. (here is the Neighbourhood Association video)

I thought that was the end of it. A story to tell down at the pub. [Read more…] about Celebrity Stalking

Anglicans and same sex marriage

06/24/2007 by Debra

Tom Dobbs: [at a presidental debate] You want an amendment against same sex marriage! Anyone who’s ever been married knows it’s always the same sex!

bigotry_1.gifDiscussion on this issue was started in 2004, at that time it was thought maybe someone with a brain could be found in 2007, and now many would like to make the decision, to make the decision, sometime in 2010.

I guess at the very least you can credit them for not mistaking bigotry with infallibility.

This isn’t really even about marriage per se. It is simply to agree to bless the people in a same sex union who have been married in a civil ceremony.

This is the same church that offers pet blessings.

I guess they should have thought about the slippery slope from blessing animals to blessing gays.

Wishing on Facebook

06/23/2007 by Debra

The Great Canadian Wish List on Facebook has been taken over by the So Cons.

It seems to some, a silly thing that pro choicers care about this endeavour.
I would ask those people to consider the situation to the south of us.

Media regularly gives the crazies the floor. Christianity is no longer associated with love and charity, but with hatred, bombs and people who actually deride other christians for caring about the poor.

In a country facing mounting military deaths from an illegal and unneeded war, poverty, domestic terrorism, declining standard of living, the main election platform issue is whether or not you are pro choice. [Read more…] about Wishing on Facebook

Gunning for Lack of Control

06/23/2007 by Debra

gunhand.jpgThe Toronto Star reports today that the firearms advisory committee, has appointed virtually only gun enthusiasts, and is operating essentially in secret.

Its dozen members include a man who argued that more guns in the hands of students would have helped in the recent Virginia Tech massacre, in which 32 people were killed, and another shooting aficionado who described a weapon used in last September’s Dawson College killings in Montreal as “fun.”

More inspiring words

“If even 1 per cent of the students and staff at Virginia Tech had been allowed to exercise their right to self defence, then this tragedy would have been stopped in its very beginning and dozens of lives would have been saved,” Dr. Mike Ackermann, a Nova Scotia physician, wrote in a letter to the Ottawa Sun in April. “There are never any mass killings at shooting ranges; only at schools and other so-called `gun-free zones.'”

Gary Mauser, a Simon Fraser University professor renowned for his work opposing gun laws, wrote an opinion piece in the Vancouver Sun in February: “Firearm laws divert scarce resources from alternative approaches that might actually improve public safety.”

Never one to accept anything without research I looked up the “safety stats”, surely the more heavily armed Americans must have a society virtually free from violence.

Um…maybe not

Stronach battling breast cancer

06/23/2007 by Debra

Todays Star carries an article about Belinda Stronach and her diagnoses with breast cancer.

Stronach is in an undisclosed hospital in the Toronto area after undergoing a mastectomy and breast reconstruction on Tuesday. The type of cancer she has is known as DCIS – ductal carcinoma in situ – one of the more common and most treatable forms of breast cancer.

Her executive assistant, Greg MacEachern, did confirm the surgery to the Star and said he had spoken to Stronach yesterday, reporting that she is “upbeat and positive.” He added: “While her personal health is a private matter, she would like to emphasize the importance of early detection and is grateful they were able to catch the disease at this early point.”

Since April, Stronach has had a lumpectomy, ultrasound and a series of core biopsies, and it was after further consultation with doctors that she decided to undergo a full mastectomy this week. Chances of the cancer spreading or recurring are radically reduced when mastectomy is the chosen treatment, research has shown.

Stronach’s chances of recovery are also high, statistically speaking. Almost 90 per cent of those women who are diagnosed with breast cancer between the ages of 30 and 49 survive the disease.

I wish her a speedy and full recovery.
